When i read a news recently on a single moms graduated from UCLA brought me attention whether the decision to further study while rising your kids is a good decision or not. Good for her as she start to take those degrees at the age of 22, which is still young for me, but how about other single mother which already turn to 30s?
And above all, will get back to college bring a "better life" as all of us always dreams of?
As James Altucher's mentioned in his blog, there's nothing good in sending your kids to college, even worse i think if you yourself as a mother or parent get back to college (well unless you have enough money and time to spend but not while you are just a single moms and still raising your kids).
The average tuition cost is approximately $16,000 per year. Plus assume another $10,000 in living costs, books, etc. $26,000 in total for a complete cost of $104,000 in a 4 year period. Some people choose to go more expensive by going to a private college and some people choose to go a little cheaper by going public but this is an average. Also, a huge assumption is that its just for a 4 year period.
According to the Department of Education, only 54% of undergraduates graduate within 6 years. So for the 46% that don’t graduate, or take 10 years to graduate, this is a horrible investment. But lets assume your children are in the brilliant first half who finish within six years (and hopefully within four).
Is it worth it?
For me, with the same amount of money, so much thing could be done just to improve yourself and get a "better life". I know, it is really a hard decision to make. As a single mother, what we would prefer to choose is something that has already being proven by our surrounding and taking a risk to do something that beyond our control on the result is a big step to take.
Well, like in this story, further study and get back to college will get you a better job, in result will get you a better payday. Isn't it? Well, the theory is always the same and in some extend proven. But provided that you have some amount of money to spend, here are some of my suggestions:-
- Don't get a degree, get a cert of something
Since i'm coming from IT background, i found that my Microsoft Certification is much more valuable than my degree. Degree brings nothing much as no practical things and real life example learned. But do not take Microsoft Cert as its already saturated in the market. Try to take VMWare Cert, Cisco's, RedHat or maybe Project Management Cert. They are all take you not more than just one month for training, and some of them just one day for the cert examination. All this certification justify that you have some sort of specialized skills and that is what most company needs from a candidate.
Out of IT Industry i believe there is so much more skills that you could learn and get certification for it to get a better chance for a better job. Simple google search bring me below 2 results for your reference.
